Heavy rains have helped the recovery of wetlands and springs in the region

SanCristóbal – The heavy rains that have been recorded for a week in San Cristóbal de Las Casas are recovering the wetlands and springs areas, fortunately with the heavy rains they could recover their level during this season, San Cristóbal suffered water shortages due to the drought that occurred for almost three years in the region, as reported by environmentalist Nicolás Tolentino Gómez Velasco.

In an interview, he announced that due to the arrival of heavy rains in the highlands of Chiapas and especially the city of San Cristóbal, the level of the wetlands and springs María Eugenia and Kisst, located in the southern part of the city, is currently recovering 40%, with the presence of rains and hurricanes the level will increase.

“Fortunately the level of the wetlands of María Eugenia and Kisst is recovering, there is still a long way to go but I am sure that our wetlands will recover, because unfortunately we were suffering from water shortages in San Cristóbal for three years, there was a drought and it will take a little while to level it out, the rain has left us a very important amount of help, at least hydrating the wetlands, we consider this rain important, basically those runoffs that come from the mountains, the high plain and the middle part, that water is helping to fill the wetlands and springs,” he said.

Finally, he said that hurricanes will occur in other regions and in the Jovel Valley it will rain a lot, we must be careful of hurricanes, but also that rain, that water, will help a lot to recover the level of the springs, “it purifies the endemic species, the vegetation, the hills, we are talking about perhaps 40% of the springs recovering.”
